Support for PHP Versions

Having outdated/antiquated code on a website can be detrimental to the functionality of a site. You may have heard us preaching it before, but keeping plugins, content management systems, WordPress versions and other website code up-to-date is imperitive to the health of your website. It’s very common for people to update their website design, but as a website owner you also want to be thinking about the more technical side and also update the code on your website.

PHP – What is it?

support for PHP Versions of website codePHP is an acronym for “Hypertext Preprocessor”. It is “a widely-used open source general-purpose scripting language that is especially suited for web development and can be embedded into HTML.” (per php.net) As with any software it gets updated and older versions become obsolete. If your website hasn’t been updated for a while (prior to this year for the most part) it could have outdated PHP code on it. Our team has been reaching out to our clients this week that have outdated PHP so they know and can get it updated.

Here is the notice they will receive from our Web Update Manager, Brandy Stockton:

“Currently your site is using PHP 5.6 and it should be using PHP 7.2.

During the release of a new PHP version, website owners using older versions can expect bugs and security issues. Developers have recently announced that support for PHP 5.6 will end December 31, 2018.

Think of your website like an automobile, maintenance is needed – even on newer models. If you do not change the oil, the vehicle will eventually quit running. The same is true with a website.

If you are interested in upgrading your website to the latest PHP version (7.2), please contact Brandy at (309) 489-0026 by December 14th.”
