Ah, Google. You couldn’t leave the holiday season alone, could you? December is typically a quiet time for changes to Google’s algorithm, but not in 2017. Per Search Engine Land, the algorithm update happened in mid-December and rolled out affecting different areas of search as it went.
So how does this update affect your website? We’ve been doing a lot of reading and research and here is what WTI recommends you focus on to stay on top of the latest updates:
- Think mobile first: We’ve been saying it for awhile, but it is even more apparent that having a mobile-friendly design is probably the most important thing to consider starting out in 2018. - When adding content be human: Don’t just write content for keywords. While keyword remains important, writing for the person that might benefit from your content first is what is important. Provide facts, solutions, and easy methods for contacting you for help.
- Make your website FAST: Mobile speed has been ignored by many in the past as long as desktop performed well. Going forward this would be a mistake. You can use Google’s Page Insights to check both mobile and desktop speed and make sure you are in good standing.
- Keep voice search in the back of your head: With tools like Alexa from Amazon and Google Home, search that doesn’t even involve a mobile device or computer is coming into play. As you add content to your website it is good to keep in mind this type of search.
If you are reading this article and you aren’t an SEO or digital marketer, think of things in terms of how you would search and what you want to read if you were a person looking for the products you sell or services that you offer. Look for a digital marketer for the technical help.
Things always change. With Google and other search engines things change so frequently it can be hard to keep up.
